I've been an overseas development worker, a sports writer, and a Capitol Hill reporter. I finally made my way to academia, where my research interests are in petrofiction, pedagogy, student-centered and service learning, feminist and postcolonial studies.

I previously taught for Indiana University of Pennsylvania as a temporary professor. I have been an adjunct for Butler County Community College and Pennsylvania Highlands Community College. I also served as an AmeriCorps volunteer at Lenape Technical School in Ford City, PA. After I completed my MA, I taught fulltime for five years at Eastern Arizona College. I was a volunteer English teacher in Ombalantu, Namibia with WorldTeach and I worked with Outreach Kenya Development Volunteers to help build/establish a library.
